    ACCESS CONTROL CARD READERS

    ACCESS CONTROL CARD READERS

Card readers are vital access control systems components that accept user credentials to allow or deny access to buildings, rooms, or facilities. They connect to door controllers via a cable system and store all logic information, the cardholder database, the schedules, and the access levels.

Data is sent to the controller when a card is scanned, which decides whether to unlock the door. Two primary communication protocols are used to connect card readers to door controllers.

      • Wiegand Protocol – It is older and still used but has limitations, such as reduced reliability and distance constraints.
      • OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) – Modern and robust communication method based on the RS-485 serial computer communication format, providing enhanced security and the ability to alert users if the reader or system fails.

Card credentials have different formats. For instance, Prox cards have hard coded IDs and facility numbers, making them easy to copy. Smart cards, however, are more secure, and they use encryption to prevent duplication and offer a more reliable access control option. Card readers also have different form factors based on installation requirements.

For instance, Mullion readers are designed for narrow spaces, like aluminum storefront door frames, while single gang readers cover electrical boxes. Some feature keypads for PIN entry. In high-security settings, access may require both a card and a PIN.

Furthermore, the latest innovations feature mobile credentials stored in apps or digital wallets, enabling access by holding a phone near the reader. Another is a biometric reader that uses fingerprint or facial recognition for enhanced security, though it can be more expensive.
